Players fund their own AI wallets instead of developers absorbing per-token costs.
Developers get full platform access free. AI costs scale with your player base, not your budget.
How much does it cost players?
Fractions of a cent per AI interaction. A player gets hundreds of NPC conversations for under $1.
Top-ups start at $5 via Stripe. Players set their own spending limits.
Which AI models are supported?
We connect directly to top AI providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, and more.
You configure which model powers each quality tier for your game.
What game engines work?
All of them. It's a REST API. Unity, Unreal, Godot, custom engines, web games —
if it can make an HTTP POST, it works. SSE streaming for real-time responses.
What if a player runs out of funds?
API returns a 402. Handle it in your game — fall back to scripted dialogue,
show a top-up prompt, or degrade gracefully. Wallet holds prevent surprise charges.
How does BYOK make money?
A small platform fee is included in token pricing. Players pay for AI usage, and BYOK takes a percentage
on each request. No subscriptions, no hidden fees — we earn when your game succeeds.
How does the Safe Wallet work?
Before every AI call, BYOK places a pre-authorized hold on the player's wallet for the estimated cost.
After inference completes, the actual cost is settled and any difference is refunded instantly.
Players set their own spending limits, and their balance can never go negative.
What is the efficiency rating?
Every game on BYOK earns an efficiency badge from A+ to C based on how well it uses AI tokens.
Tighter prompts and smarter context management mean lower costs per interaction and a higher rating.
Players can see a game's rating before they play, and developers with better ratings get improved visibility on the platform.
Can players see their AI usage in real-time?
Yes. The BYOK Player Overlay shows wallet balance, session spend, quality tier, and cost per interaction in real-time.
Players can toggle the overlay on or off. Full transparency means players always know exactly what they're spending.
How do NPCs work with Spite?
Build your NPCs in Spite with personality traits, knowledge graphs, relationships, and forbidden topics.
Define what each NPC knows at different depth levels (expert, familiar, aware), what they don't know, and what they'll only reveal after players reach specific milestones.
Use milestone markers like "act_2_complete" or "discovered_betrayal" to gate knowledge — tag entries, relationships, and knowledge with available_at and revoked_at markers, and BYOK filters everything server-side before it reaches the AI.
When a player talks to an NPC, BYOK fetches the latest context in real-time and manages conversation memory — your NPCs always reflect your latest worldbuilding changes.
How does game intelligence work?
After every player interaction, a single async background job (Oban) makes one budget-tier AI call (~0.1¢) that extracts behavioral signals, emotional shifts, reputation events, milestone triggers, narrative threads, and analytics data.
Results fan out to eight subsystems: adaptive entity memory, reputation propagation, player archetypes, milestone detection, narrative threading, smart cost autopilot, cross-game passports, and interaction analytics.
The player never waits — intelligence runs fully async after the conversation completes. No manual flagging, no scripted triggers. Toggle each feature on or off from your game settings. Your game client can poll for events or receive webhook notifications when milestones fire.
Can players jailbreak my NPCs?
BYOK is designed to prevent this. System prompts are injected server-side before every request — players never see or control them.
Knowledge boundaries and milestone markers are enforced at runtime, so an NPC literally can't reveal secrets outside their defined scope or ahead of the player's progression.
Response filtering catches attempts to break character or violate content rules. Your narrative stays intact.
What is Spite?
Spite is our AI worldbuilding tool. Create characters, locations, factions, and lore with AI assistance,
organized in a knowledge graph with relationships, tiered knowledge levels, milestone markers, and server-side filtering.
Gate any knowledge behind progression milestones, revoke it when the story demands, and BYOK fetches the filtered context in real-time per request — no export step needed. Changes you make in Spite are instantly reflected in-game.
